In the world of high school baseball, expectations can be a heavy burden, but sometimes, they're a weight worth carrying. That's the story of Traverse City St. Francis, a team that not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it, completing a repeat run as MHSAA Division 3 champions.
The Gladiators' journey was an impressive one, and it all started with a core group of seniors and their exceptional pitching duo. With a 34-5 record, St. Francis dominated the season, and their confidence was well-earned. As senior Lanse Vos put it, "We knew there was a good group."
One of the key moments in their championship run was a strategic decision by coach Tom Passinault. By pulling Vos before he hit the pitch limit in the semifinal, the coach ensured he'd be available for the final. It was a brilliant move, and one that paid off handsomely.
"We had Lanse available, he is our best combination of fastball and off-speed. He had them on their front foot all day," Passinault said, reflecting on the final. And indeed, Vos delivered, allowing just three hits and no runs in six innings.
But it wasn't just about pitching. The Gladiators' offense was on fire, with Vos contributing two hits and four RBI. Their early lead of 4-0 in the first two innings set the tone, and they never looked back.
In contrast, Kalamazoo Christian, making their first trip to a Final, finished 26-9. Their head coach, Russ Meyer, summed up the feeling, "It stings now. They believed in it."
In another part of the state, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart was celebrating a different kind of victory. Their win over Marcellus in the Division 4 championship game was a gift for longtime coach Earl Hartman, who was celebrating his 57th wedding anniversary on the same day.
Sacred Heart's journey was marked by overcoming powerful opponents like Beal City and Portland St. Patrick. Senior Brady Davis was the star of the show, both on the mound and at the plate. His first-ever home run, a "bomb" as he called it, gave the Irish a commanding 7-0 lead.
"That team is unreal," said Marcellus head coach Christian Hutson. But it was Sacred Heart's day, and the community turned out to celebrate their first title in 30 years and their coach's special anniversary.
